Liver Cancer

The number of in-patient discharges and deaths due to the malignant neoplasm of liver and intrahepatic bile ducts, commonly known as liver cancer, continued to rise steadily in recent years. In 2009, 9 652 in-patient discharges and deaths were related to liver cancer, accounting for 6.8% of hospitalization due to all types of cancers.

Liver cancer has been the third leading cause of cancer death in Hong Kong for years. In general, the death rate and age-standardized death rate were higher in male. The death rates for both sexes remained relatively stable while the age-standardized death rate showed a decreasing trend in recent years. In 2009, 1 488 persons died from liver cancer, accounting for 11.6% of all cancer deaths. The death rates for male and female were 32.5 and 11.2 per 100 000 population of respective sex.

In general, the age-specific death rates of liver cancer for both sexes increased with age. In 2009, the age-specific death rates of male were higher than those of female.
