The number of in-patient discharges and deaths due to the malignant neoplasm of stomach, commonly known as stomach cancer, continued to rise gradually in recent years. In 2009, 5 494 in-patient discharges and deaths were related to stomach cancer, accounting for 3.9% of hospitalization due to all types of cancers.

The number of deaths and death rate due to stomach cancer for male were higher than those for female between 1981 and 2009. In 2009, 656 persons died from stomach cancer, accounting for 5.1% of all cancer deaths. The death rates for male and female were 12.6 and 6.5 per 100 000 population of respective sex.

The age-standardized death rates due to stomach cancer decreased between 1981 and 2009. The age-standardized death rates of male were higher than those of female.

In 2009, the age-specific death rates due to stomach cancer for both sexes increased steeply in older age. The age-specific death rates of male were higher than those of female.
