The number of in-patient discharges and deaths due to cerebrovascular diseases were quite steady in recent years. In 2009, 26 817 in-patient discharges and deaths were related to cerebrovascular diseases, accounting for 1.6% of all in-patient discharges and deaths.

Cerebrovascular diseases was the fourth leading cause of death in 2009. The number of deaths and death rate remained stable between 1981 and 2009. In 2009, the number of deaths were 3 443, accounting for 8.4% of all registered deaths. The death rates for male and female were 53.5 and 45.3 per 100 000 population of respective sex.

The age-standardized death rate due to cerebrovascular diseases has dropped by more than half over the past two decades from around 60 to below 30 per 100 000 standard population.

In 2009, the age-specific death rates due to cerebrovascular diseases increased markedly after age 60. Compared to females, males had higher death rates in all age groups.
