The number of in-patient discharges and deaths due to diabetes mellitus were quite steady in recent years. In 2009, 25 530 in-patient discharges and deaths were related to diabetes mellitus, accounting for 1.5% of all in-patient discharges and deaths.

Diabetes mellitus was the tenth leading cause of death for female in year 2009. The number of deaths and death rate due to diabetes mellitus for female were higher than those for male between 1981 and 2009 (except the number of death for both sexes tie in for the year 1989). A decreasing trend was observed in the number of deaths and death rate since year 2003. In 2009, the number of deaths were 492, accounting for 1.2% of all registered deaths. The death rates for male and female were 6.5 and 7.5 per 100 000 population of respective sex.
