The number of in-patient discharges and deaths due to pneumonia continued to rise gradually in recent years. In 2009, 42 998 in-patient discharges and deaths were related to pneumonia, accounting for 2.5% of all in-patient discharges and deaths.

Pneumonia was the third leading cause of death in 2009. An increasing trend was observed in the number of deaths and death rate since 2002. In 2009, the number of deaths were 5 312, accounting for 12.9% of all registered deaths. The death rates for male and female were 87.3 and 65.7 per 100 000 population of respective sex.

The age-standardized death rate due to pneumonia (37.1 per 100 000 standard population) was stable in recent few years.

In 2009, the-age specific death rates due to pneumonia increased markedly after age 65. Compared to females, males had higher death rates in all age groups.
